ORCV- Melbourne to Portland 2013

The race from Melbourne to Portland this year revives one of the races from very early days of the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria. This 163 nm race is to be held on the Melbourne cup holiday weekend in November. The passage that the competitors must take starts in the vicinity of Drapers Reef in Queenscliff and finishes at Portland between the green light at the eastern most end of the Lee Breakwater Pier and a yellow inflatable pyramid buoy just north of it.
The race is a qualifier for the ORCV East and West coaster races to Hobart and the Sydney to Hobart run by the CYCA. It also forms part of the Offshore Championship. After this year, the race will alternate with the Stanley Race over the same weekend.
Why Portland?
After many requests from members for a change of destination and a new challenge, the Committee decided on Portland, based on the facilities available at the new marina and the support of the local Portland Yacht Club, Marina and Local Council.
Portland became Victoria’s first permanent European settlement in 1834 and the town has beautifully maintained heritage buildings, excellent accommodation and great food. The Club is a short walk from the Marina and the town just ten minutes away making it a perfect location for a race finish.
Every participating vessel will be equipped with a YB tracker. They will transmit the speed, direction and GPS positions of the fleet every thirty minutes through out the race. Friends, family, organisers and supporters can easily follow their favourite boat or the whole fleet on line here.
