The 2016 Newport Bermuda Race, A.K.A. The Thrash to the Patch, is building up to its 50th race start on Friday June 17th. Running every two years its 50th edition plays host to 190 yachts who will race the 635 nautical miles from Newport, Rhode Island, USA to Bermuda. The Newport Bermuda is the oldest regularly schduled oceanic race and is in preparations for its third largest fleet of yachts to depart Newport on Friday. Boasting yachts from 23 different countries, 41 different States in the US, and seven different divisions including the newly added Superyacht Division that has no limit on professional sailors.
The first Newport Bermuda Race began in 1906, with three yachts on the starting line, was set up "In order to encourage the designing, building, and sailing of small seaworthy yachts, to make popular cruising upon deep water, and to develop in the amateur sailor a love of true seamanship, and to give opportunity to become proficient in the art of navigation. . . .” - Cruising Club of America's Commodore 1923 Herbert L. Stone. 50 iterations later, over 3.2 million nautical miles sailed involving approximately 50,000 sailors, another fleet of yachts are hopeful of a great start, favourable winds, and smooth sailing.
