Race to Scotland

  • May 01, 2017

Starting on the 7th May 2017, sailor Ken Fowler is planning to sail his RS Aero from west Cornwall all the way to John o'Groats, all in the name of raising money for a good cause. He hopes that his endeavour will raise £50,000 for Cancer Research and the Oakhaven Hospice Trust in Lymington.

Although only learning to sail a dinghy a couple of years ago, Ken is now gunning to break the record set by Ron Pattenden in 2004. Fowler is hoping to complete the journey in less than 64 days, not only because this would break the record, but it also nears the limit of time he can take off from being a air traffic controller!

He is hoping that having modern technology on-board will give him an edge. He will have a YB tracker for the entirety of his journey, and if he does succeed (we have no doubt he will), then the GPS position and speed data will help with confirmation at the record adjudicators.

He is most looking forward to seeing and sailing the North Cornwall coast, as well as the surf beaches of Devon and South Wales. He is also excited to sail through the Scottish islands as the view of Skye and Mull will hint that his journey is near its end.  Although he is not the most seasoned sailor, he believes that coming into sailing at a later age gives him some advantages including ability to self analyse and a heightened awareness of safety, due to his day job.

All of us at YB Tracking wish him the best of luck in his record attempt
