Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2018

  • January 03, 2019

Every year, teams from many different walks of life brave the unforgiving Atlantic Ocean united in one objective – to row from La Gomera, Canary Islands to Nelsons Dockyard, Antigua & Barbados –for charity as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. This year is no different, with 28 teams of mixed numbers jumping into their boats to overcome one of the toughest challenges known to man.

With the first Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge being held in 2011, the race became an annual occurrence in 2015 starting each December. Since then, it is now widely regarded as the toughest rowing event in the world.

The row itself isn’t the only focus of this challenge, as each team has a chosen charity that they will be fundraising for, with over 6 million Euro raised for charities all over the world in the past 4 races alone. It’s definitely no easy feat either, as each team will row in excess of 1.5 million oar strokes, lose 5000 calories a day and a potential 12kgs over the duration of the race, not forgetting they will have to face waves of up to 20ft high!

Upon reaching the shores of Antigua & Barbados, the teams join a very exclusive list of people. More people have climbed Everest than have rowed an ocean, and they will not be quick to forget this monumental achievement!

We wish all of the teams taking part a safe and enjoyable journey – we’re with you the whole way!
