The 45th Geraldton Ocean Classic
- March 06, 2014
The north-bound race to Geraldton starts off Leighton Beach at 1330 on Friday, 7th March, with the race back to Freemantle starting a week later on Friday 14th March.
South of Perth Yacht Club's Geraldton Ocean Classic is one of Western Australia's iconic cat 2 blue water yachting events. The race attracts the cream of WA's ocean racing fleet and is one that every skipper desperately wants to win. The Race will be conducted in March so if you have ever thought about doing the Geraldton Race but were put off by the strong winds on the ride home in the traditional October time slot, this is the time of year to give it a go.
Traditionally Division 1 & 2 yachts make up the fleet but once again SOPYC has incorporated a "Double Handed" division which will involve yachts sailing the 212 nautical mile race with only two people. The Double Handed Division will be a test of both team work and endurance and is already attracting a considerable amount of interest.
Spectators will be best able to view the start from the North Mole and/or for those interested in following the positions of each yacht, a race tracker on South of Perth Yacht Club's website will enable interested followers of the event to see the progress of their favourites in real time with YB Tracking. Each vessel will have a YB tracker installed which will give the boats gps position, speed and direction along with other items of information every fifteen minutes. This means arm chair admirals, friends, family and supporters can follow the whole fleet or just an individual boat with a click of a mouse.
If you want to know more about this race head on over to the SoPYC website.
